Who Needs IRP Registration?
IRP registration is required for commercial motor vehicles that:
- Have a gross vehicle weight or registered gross vehicle weight exceeding 26,000 pounds, OR
- Have three or more axles regardless of weight, OR
- Are used in combination and the weight exceeds 26,000 pounds
- AND travel across state or provincial borders
Vehicles operating entirely within Minnesota (intrastate only) do not need IRP registration and should be registered with standard Minnesota plates.
