One IRS form stands between your truck and its plates: Form 2290. Until the IRS stamps your Schedule 1, you can’t register — so getting it filed fast and right matters. Here’s how it works.

What is Form 2290?

Form 2290 is the IRS tax return used to report and pay the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT). This federal tax helps fund highway maintenance and construction. If you operate heavy vehicles on public highways, you must file Form 2290 every year. The IRS then issues a stamped Schedule 1 (proof of payment) — and you can’t register your vehicles without it.

Who Needs to File Form 2290?

You must file Form 2290 if you have a highway motor vehicle registered in your name with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more.

Taxable Vehicles Include:

  • Trucks with a gross weight of 55,000 lbs or more
  • Truck tractors and trailers when combined weight reaches 55,000 lbs
  • Buses used for transportation for hire

Suspended Vehicles (Tax Exemption):

Vehicles that travel 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles) during the tax period qualify for a tax suspension. You must still file Form 2290, but no tax is due. If the vehicle later exceeds the mileage limit, you must file an amended return and pay the tax.

Form 2290 Filing Deadlines

Annual Filing Deadline: August 31st

For vehicles first used on public highways during July (the beginning of the tax period), Form 2290 must be filed by August 31st. The tax period runs from July 1 through June 30.

Vehicles First Used After July:

If you place a vehicle in service after July, file Form 2290 by the last day of the month following the month of first use. For example, if you put a vehicle in service in October, file by November 30.

Miss the deadline and your truck sits. Late filing brings IRS penalties and interest — and you cannot register or renew registration without a stamped Schedule 1.

Form 2290 Tax Rates (Tax Year 2024-2025)

HVUT is calculated based on vehicle weight:

Taxable Gross Weight Tax Rate
55,000 lbs $100
56,000 - 59,000 lbs $122 per year
60,000 - 74,999 lbs Graduated from $178 to $478
75,000 lbs and over $550 per year (maximum)

Note: Rates are subject to change annually. Consultran stays current with IRS rate adjustments.
