Minnesota IFTA Filing Services

Streamline your fuel tax reporting with Consultran's expert IFTA filing services. We've been helping Minnesota trucking companies file accurate, timely IFTA reports since 1973.

Every interstate carrier owes four fuel tax returns a year — and each one is a chance for a costly mistake. Here’s what IFTA involves, and how we take it off your plate.

What is IFTA?

The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is a cooperative agreement among U.S. states and Canadian provinces that simplifies fuel tax reporting for interstate motor carriers. Instead of filing separate fuel tax returns in each jurisdiction you operate, IFTA allows you to file one quarterly report with your base jurisdiction.

Who Needs IFTA?

You need an IFTA license if you operate a qualified motor vehicle that:

  • Has two axles and a gross vehicle weight or registered gross vehicle weight exceeding 26,000 pounds, OR
  • Has three or more axles regardless of weight, OR
  • Is used in combination and the weight exceeds 26,000 pounds gross vehicle or registered gross vehicle weight
  • AND travels across state or provincial borders

IFTA Filing Deadlines

IFTA quarterly reports are due on the last day of the month following each quarter: Q1 (Jan–Mar) by April 30, Q2 (Apr–Jun) by July 31, Q3 (Jul–Sep) by October 31, and Q4 (Oct–Dec) by January 31.

Missing a deadline costs real money. Late filings bring penalties, interest charges, and potential suspension of your IFTA license — which can also block your IRP renewal.

Required IFTA Records

To file IFTA returns, you must maintain detailed records for at least four years:

Fuel purchase records

Date, location, gallons purchased, fuel type, seller information, and vehicle identification.

Distance records

Trip sheets, GPS logs, and ELD data showing the routes traveled.

Mileage information

Beginning and ending odometer/hubodometer readings, plus total miles per jurisdiction.

Vehicle information

VIN, unit number, date placed in service, and date removed from the fleet.
